Wow, I had no idea that: a) this was a thing, and b) that it was this big. Not the Quakecon dedicated event, but Doom duels in general; I was always under the assumption that it's just a couple of guys occasionally being silly with a new functionality added to the game in recent years. It was really interesting hearing the crowed cheer and seeing how hectic the duels were.

Then again, how sophisticated can this competitive gameplay get? Doom has no vertical aiming, hard aim-assist, and really overpowered guns (SSG and BFG); where do skill or tactics come into play here, compared to games like Quake? There are no movement mechanics (to my knowledge), no item respawn to time, and you move so fast you can evade most shots. I mostly see spawn frags and some map control and enemy prediction. I'm not trying to be disrespectful, but I'd be happy if someone could tell me what makes this complex enough to be considered competitive, (well-deserved) nostalgia aside.

Also is it still actually played? If I try, will I find someone to play with without planning it days in advance? Captcha: Submit resiBro.
