I think "progression systems" are more responsible. Like he says, arena shooters are 100% based on starting on a level playing field between players and you can't have that if you can't use a rocket launcher because you haven't reached level 42 and completed the rocket launcher multiplayer challenges yet.

Progressive unlock systems, cheevos and other shit like that I think are low-key one of the worst things that ever happened to video games. It's sad that we need a fucking carrot on a stick for everything to get people to play games now instead of just playing them for the GAME's sake.
