How does the Marathon series (particularly Marathon 2) have so much SOUL while Halo is so SOULLESS? What went wrong along the way?

Agreed. Both The Hero and Mjolnir Recon number 54, also known as The Cyborg, of Marathon are without a doubt the two most underrated 90s FPS protagonists and deserve more love.
