I got mine for just short of 100 aus dollars from japan. Was easy to mod if you have half decent soldering skills. The general picture is streets ahead of standard and really tightens up the signal although I can still see some faint interference and the vert. line effect but If I was using a consumer tv I wouldn't see it. there is apparently a more complex mod to remove this as well although it requires building/buying a circuit board. Haven't tried it but I would guess the component mod you're talking about fundamentally wouldn't change the signal quality.
