Interestingly the "perfect" ending isn't the cannon ending for this game if you look at future games in the series. In generations you fight metal at Stardust Speedway's bad future, and the same metal is fought in Sonic 4 Ep II. My headcanon is that Sonic was able to cause a good future in each zone by breaking the animal capsules and metal projectors, but failed to get all the time zones thus allowing metal sonic to alter little planet's timeline after sonic left.

I understand people will righteously dislike the level design in this game. But holy fuck, that Eur/Jap version music, the aesthetics of the setting, it's just so nice it saves the game's shortcomings.

It means you have to play decent to earn/keep your speed. It sets Sonic on a different type than other platformers.
