it's a fuckin banger. especially w a genesis controller. one of the few 2600 games that doesn't feel extremely dated.
i just got a harmony cart and an s-video magical bullshit board that i'll be installing soon...

>things like the seasonal graphics
This is a perfect example. On the SNES it's just a simple palette change, just writing a few values to CGRAM, and bam, it just werks.
Ya can't just fuckin do that with bitmap graphics on PC. Have fun taking a day or two rewriting that, and that's just one small example of likely thousands.
> but muh open source codez
older games especially are built for and around the hardware they are on. source code / disassembles mean jack shit if they are utilizing the hardware directly, which most old games do, very heavily.

yes, you load the cardboard box with a cartridge in it down into a shopping bag, and you are content with your purchase.

you like to imagine this perfect world right? where you read or watch some tutorial, you type code in and the result is expected? that just ain't how it is. reality is fucking messy. chips are fucked and people are wrong.
i can't imagine how these poor jaguar devs felt with buggy ass devkit software on top of buggy ass hardware... you know what? actually i can imagine it. because i've actually been doing retro game dev...

> I heard majority of developers who didnt figure out the Jaguar's architecture
The SDK development software had bugs. The hardware had bugs. It wasn't just "figuring it out", it was truly a half baked fuckin disaster.

> tons of games
Weird because i remember playing Kingdom Hearts 1&2, Katamari Damacy, Burnout: Takedown, Need for Speed Underground, Timesplitters 3: Future Perfect, Simpsons: Road Rage, NHL Hitz 2003, God of War, Shadow of the Colossus and all 3 GTAs and they were all sucking wind at 30FPS, and if they tried for 60 they sure as hell didn't maintain it.
So please, tell me, where are these "tons of games" that run at a smooth 60FPS that you are referring to?

i'm pretty sure my reaction to the PS2 was HOLY FUCK THIS LOOKS LIKE REAL LIFE.

man i remember when it was segasages, but i mean isn't the point of JRPGs is to explore, experiment with your attacks and strategize? the way he describes following a guide to a T and just replaying the motions like a robot sounds fuckin miserable.

i guess; but i don't really think about it that way. you load memory values into the accumulator, perform operations on them, and store them back in memory: these values represent something in the game be it graphics, logic, movement, music, etc. i suppose that's "algebra" but that's not how i see it personally.

if you think your personal experience in learning retro game development is going to be akin to a dubious urban legend producing a heroic miracle in a ridiculously short timespan, you're gonna have a bad time.
...i wish there was more i could do to get people involved with retro development, but at this point, i honestly don't know how. whenever the conversation here exits the realm of tech specs, the thread becomes eerily silent. i'm tired of posting tutorials and researching information for anons for the hundredth fucking time only to never hear a single follow up from anyone. it's lonely and exhausting. i'll keep trying though.
all the while the choir of useless shitbrains keep LARPing about how easy everything is. heh. yeah ok. everything is "trivial" until you actually try to do it. i guess it's my unwanted responsibility to correct this grossly inaccurate arrogant misinformation with the hope that Maybe if you set realistic expectations then Maybe you stand a chance of persevering through he brutal introductory learning process and start making awesome shit. that was the hope for this stupid thread after all. i'll keep trying i guess.
