When DLC is bad or pointless it's easily ignored. When it's well done though, it's awesome. Monster Hunter does it right. I also like how most fighting games handle DLC.

Monster Hunter is a pretty big jam of mine. Amazing action game, tons of fun both single player and with a group and it has a bunch of free DLC quests and things.

I also play a lot of fighters and think DLC is great for those. More characters can get added and if you want to play as them you can do that but otherwise you still fight against them in multiplayer matches.

Monster Hunter is possibly one of my favorite series ever and the latest one was the best so far.

I really like the Etrian Odyssey games as well as Etrian Mystery Dungeon which is the first really good MD game I think Chunsoft has made since SFC Shiren.

Just Cause 2 was amazingly fun

Many fighting games, especially Injustice which is currently duking with KoF '98 as my favorite fighter of all time.

Too many roguelikes to mention, but Powder developed a few years ago remains one of my favorite games of all time.

Batman Arkham Asylum. I was really disappointed in the sequels, but that game was great.

Fez gets a lot of hate because it's creator was such a douche and people expected it to be a platformer, but I loved what it was. One of the only puzzle games that I ended up having a thick stack of hand written notes and junk in years and years.

Witcher 2 was great and half way through 3 right now I'm loving it just as much.

Animal Crossing New Leaf.

Galax-Z wasn't incredible, but I really enjoyed it.

Tomb Raider Underworld was amazing. The reboot makes me sad, but Underworld sold for shit.

the new X-Com was amazing. I could keep going, but that's a smattering at any rate.

Anyone who says that all games turned to shit in this generation or that generation are idiots. Trends change, but people who genuinely enjoy video games will always be able to find ones they enjoy. The problem is that as games have grown, they've become more popular and for larger audiences in the past.

I don't like Halo, Call of Duty, Minecraft, DotA or a host of other games that appeal to younger generations. But I still have more awesome games piling up than I have time to play.

Also, DLC isn't necessarily bad. Perfect example pictured. Boatloads of content on the cart, with regluar DLC quests and the like, all free.

Well, the things that are top selling are doing so because that's what appeals to that generation of gamers. There's nothing wrong with that though, if they like Call of Duty they can play it all they want.

The great thing about the gaming market these days though is that it's fucking massive. Orders of magnitude bigger than it was in the 8, 16 and even 32 bit eras. So you don't need to pay any attention to what's most popular at this point. Even pretty niche games get enough support that they can keep going.

And despite the bad (or what seem to you and me to be bad) games out there, there are still tons of new ones that are great as well. It's just there are so many, that the bad ones can seem like a huge wall.

Well for one thing, the games weren't shitty. At least to us. There was something exciting about the game being so complicated, or seemingly complicated that you had to familiarize yourself with a lot of knowledge before even getting started.

Flight Similator was a perfect example. It was designed so that if you could play it well, you pretty well had a good baseline on the skills needed for flying an actual plane because it was such a complete simulation.

I don't know how to describe how or why that should be fun to anyone else though. Tastes vary.

Also, I'm not saying I don't also love new games. I am actually one of the most vocal proponents of modern gaming on this board and am of the opinion that we're living in a kind of golden age of games in many ways.

But I do sometimes feel nostalgic for the old kinds of games that don't really get made these days.

Nah, there are still good games being made. The last thing we need is another crash. If anything emulation should be encouraged to keep the bar high so that new games are encouraged to get more work put into them because of all the competition they have.
