Loved the shit out of this game

Random question, are there any earlier examples of games like this? I loved the shit out of this game back in the GBA. It was the closest thing to Diablo II and had it's own charm. Were there any earlier JRPGs for SNES or NES that were like this, as in real time combat with XP and Loot?
