Same here man 4th-5th grade. It was a fad that came about like Tamagotchi a few years earlier and went on to be highly successful. Was also preceded by DBZ and a few years after the Gundam fad would catch on.

This was a bit overwhelming at the time since it is part of the era when many video game legends and their franchises became firmly established.

I only had an N64 at the time so a Chinese friend at school told me his brother was a programmer and could copy the red version for me if I gave him a floppy disk so I gave him a red floppy disk and it happened to be in another language. At the time I did not know how to tell the difference between Japanese and Chinese so I'm not sure which it was.
Got the blue version some years later when Stadium came out to play on the transfer pak.

Last tfw going to the mall and playing Primal Rage at the arcade and afterwards parents buy you a holographic 2nd Gen card in Japanese at the card kiosk.
