Personally can't really separate the design and the gameplay, I feel that Darkstalkers really was great about the synergy between form and function. This is something that Akiman has specifically talked about, where his game design philosophy is very big on how visuals and mechanics work together, as opposed to some pother designers who see them as completely separate and interchangeable. And that's all the more reason why it just boggles my mind when some people go on about how they only like the character designs and not the games themselves, or how they have "surpassed" their source material or whatever. It's not seeing the whole picture. But at any rate my two favorites are Huitzil and Felicia.

I've been having lots of fun playing Vampire Hunter and Vampire Savior on Fightcade. Huiztil in the former, Felicia in the latter.

Was playing Night Warriors and Vampire Savior on Capcom Fighting Collection when it first came out, but it died after a month or so. So I jumped over to Fightcade. Skill level is a lot higher there so it's tough for a casual like me, but I'm still having fun. Maining Huitzil in NW, Felicia in VSAV.

It's something I had wanted to write about for a while because the information remains relatively unknown, especially outside of Japan. As beloved as Capcom's fighting games are, not many people seem to know about the developers behind them. It's gotten to where Yoshinori Ono is about the only name people will recognize in connection to Capcom fighting games, largely due to his antics at shows and such. And I find that a real shame.

Here's a little doodle by Toshikazu Matsumoto, who spirited Darkstalkers' Huitzil, Red Earth's Gigi, and also animated Tech Romancer's Bolon. Huitzil's sprites were made in a way that each frame of animation is actually built out of many separate parts. Hundreds of chests, heads, shoulders, arms, hands, hips, thigh, and legs were drawn in various angles and states of transformation. He comments in one guidebook that putting these pieces together for each frame of animation was like solving a jigsaw puzzle.
