Some of the overland areas in VII were a bit too cramped for me, notably the initial path from Trinsic to Britain via Paws. Dungeons were too restricted by the mountains

I liked the scale in Ultima IX. There were things to discover off the roads and the towns were well spaced. It's a shame they didn't let you roam as freely as before. The engine was wasted with the needless segregation.
