Bayside, arcade rat. Lived that era. Virtua Fighter is exactly like >>5511346 said. It got attention but 3D fighting didn't really get taken seriously till Tekken came on the scene.

Virtua Fighter is to 3D Fighting as Pitfall is to side scrollers, both WERE the first and got attention and in pop culture, but the long game was done by better stuff later.

Home consoles got to where they were pretty damn close to being arcade like, at least way better than Colecovision's arcade like graphics. The rebound I'd attribute to SFII.

Though that dip does seems a bit extreme ... what does a chart not adjusted for inflation look like?
