I envy you OP. I tried to learn a bit of assembly back in the day to make simple NES/SNES homebrews, but that shit's like hieroglyphs to me.

But I'd be glad to contribute graphics or music, if it ever comes to that.

As for the gameplay, how about a top down shooter? It could take place within a single screen, where waves of enemies are coming after you, every so often a boss appears, and you have to survive for as long as possible.
