Now THAT's a good callback!

As far as console ones go, nothing beats Shiren in my opinion. Some other MDs are pretty good as well.

Could be a good time to get into Roguelikes. They're turn based so awkward controls don't matter, but they're still good and challenging with lots of fun decisions to make.

Shiren is a good place to start. Great game but accessible to newcomers of the genre.

Don't listen to him, the Mystery Dungeon series is very different from Rogue. MD2 is excellent and you might love it but it's most definitely a roguelike, not a Rogue clone.

Fatal Labyrinth for the Genesis is pretty similar to Rogue but with a graphical interface. But your best bet from what it sounds like you want is to just get a tile set for Rogue itself and play using that.

This. Actual retro roguelikes are few and far between and almost no one else on this board plays them.

Rogue itself is pretty archaic. Interesting to play now to see where the genre came from, but not that great in it's own right. And that comes from someone who played a royal fuckton of Rogue in my youth. We did have a few people playing through and posting our scores last year but only a handful stuck with it more than a couple days.

If you want a good retro Roguelike that's different from Adom, Nethack and Tome check out Shiren the Wanderer.

This is the issue with the /rlg over on /vg/. They mostly play DCSS and the like.

There are far FAR better games than Chrono Trigger out there. If you've never found one you actually think is a 10/10 for you I feel a little bad. It sounds like you don't actually like video games all that much.

OP here, I actually almost included Diablo since it is in a similar vein but we already have regular topic about it.

Have you tried Shiren the Wanderer? It's a great roguelike with boatloads of charm. The Super Famicom version is a little nastier which adds to the fun, but there's an english DS port as well that's really good.

I have been playing a lot of Shiren the Wanderer recently and have been wondering if there were any more console rouge likes other than the Mystery Dungeon series.

You don't need to play a game from start to finish to play it though. I've been playing games for almost four decades now, but have probably only actually completed less than ten percent of them. It's only the truly incredible games that I stick with all the way through. Most I play until my interest wains and I move onto something else. When I do find something I love, I tend to play the hell out of it and go through multiple times though.

Hey, any love for Shiren the Wanderer with you folks here? The DS port is pretty good, but the original SNES game is I think the best console version of a rougelike there has ever been so far. Just enough persistence to make it feel continuous, but still hard as balls with tons of fun and nasty enemies to deal with.

Was gonna tell you off about how Shiren was actually the original, but I looked and Torneko's actually game first. Huh.

But in any case, Shiren the Wanderer seems like an obvious choice.

The entire Mysterious Dungeon series is basically the guys who made Dragon Quest going "Shit, Rogue is awesome, let's make a roguelike!"

I've been playing the hell out of Shiren the Wanderer. It has charming music, gorgeous SNES graphics, and all the rage-inducing bullshit of any roguelike. Don't let the "simplified" gameplay fool you. It's streamlined but that just means you're going to only take 30 minutes on average before getting dickass buttraped by skeleton wizards or having your food stolen.
