I have difficulty choosing just a few since I find all sorts of soundtracks great. The amazing chiptunes with a few sound channels like Mega Man 2 to well orchestrated songs of Final Fantasy Tactics to licensed tracks of the Bust A Move games all find a way to appeal to me. I even have had some games like Thunder Force 5, Japanese Sonic CD, or Toshinden in the CD player more than in the game console just to listen to the music. I think one aspect I liked of PC games was the same great songs can be rendered differently through SoundBlaster's OPL2, Gravis Ultrasound, or Roland synthesizers. The amount is just too vast to even name 100 of them.

Why is the FOnewearl circled in your image?

I remember I really didn't like it at first in its day. I thought it was a simplified Diablo styled generated item gathering loop with less fluid combat that I was unimpressed with just based on watching it played solo at a friend's place. However so many of my friends were playing and they wanted me to play alongside them, so they gave me their Japanese copy (since they went online with the US version) since I couldn't afford the game. My friends even chipped in to buy the Dreamcast keyboard for me as a Christmas gift, as they couldn't stand the wait for me to d-pad type messages. The mechanics are simplistic, but then meeting so many and finding out others I knew outside my main circles of friends were playing, made it an amazing communal experience. Even met a few others through the game joining randoms and enjoyed the whole vibe of playing alongside others. The people playing were very friendly and even though the translations were all scuffed using the chat preset phrases, some very diverse teams were made on the fly. The music and visuals were fantastic and are embedded into my memories, so in the end I love the game more for the whole time with it than the game itself. Alas, it is an experience tied to the time it was out, and I am so glad I was there for it.

My main was a FOnewearl using the Soul Eater scythe weapon. Having force AOE spells/healing combined with a hunter's multi-enemy strikes was really fun to play. I remember setting the height slightly higher than average, but nowhere near max, and I'd still be towering over all the FOnewearls from the Japanese players that would run around my character. I didn't like the pointy clown shoes though, FOnewearls did not have a good shoe game.

I think maybe PSO can fit the bill.

When you close your eyes and listen. After the bootup of the Dreamcast. That amazing title screen song, which can lead into an amazing opening FMV with a memorable song. Even the menu selection noises, leading to either a mellow character creation or save/connection/server selection song. Even the load screen sounds are memorable, taking you to the lobby of Pioneer 2 which takes you and your friends far away ... home.

I kind of do too, but I accept that it was a special time, a very specific time with the perfect mix unique in that moment and I am just glad to have experienced it then. The music, the friends/people around, the environment/situation, etc. just cannot be replicated. I am glad my MMO journey began with PSO and RO, sure the mechanics are dated and all of which may be better now, but they were special beyond the game itself.

Close your eyes. You can hear the title song, followed by the menu song with the confirmation sounds, then the loading sounds, and there you are in a fantastic space lobby with another great song. Disc search noises emminating from the Dreamcast and poof various other people with their varied colors and sizes are around, some running around, lots of chatter. You check your simple mail messages.

Having overheard a couple of girls from the class before you conversing about PSO, you ask them if they were indeed talking about said game. They confirmed and you asked for their hunters license to play together once you get home. So here in this lobby, after getting home, you see the invite. Joined in and ran through Mines 2. At the end everyone trades guild cards to do it again sometime.

Friends come on, you run though a few other dungeons. Meeting a rare Rappy. Test out your Japanese or play around with the rudimentary translator, and find some nice Japanese players which notices your generic mag and give you a couple OpaOpas. It is still cool to see a garden of flowers melt away to the final battle, You've heard the end song so many times from defeating Dark Falz. This was worth doing again.

PSO was not a good game, but the conditions were right, the time was right, the people, the friends, was right. All made for a great experience. Those same conditions can never be recreated. Be at peace knowing you were there. The game may have been grindy, but yet it was definitively special.

I like game music. Some games have songs that bring the memories rushing back since I associate the good times with the melodies. The feel of some games are enhanced for me with their soundtracks and unique sound.

I too remember it fondly. It was a great time. It is not the same now, but I am just glad I was there.

I would advise against it. Some games, unfortunately, were tied to their times. In single player it would be boring and grindy. It would be very hard to replicate the community, the shared experience of discovering things for the first time with a group of friends. Meeting good people from all around the world and sending your personalized hunter card to them for additional play. It was more the experience as it was new for the console discovering stuff for the first time. Agreeing with friends to meet together at a specific time, and just enjoying playing a game together. They were good times, but that situation cannot be recreated, they are fond memories but my time with PSO and RO were special times of the past. Go make new memories with friends with a game they'd agree to play alongside you as well, as I do not think they'd put up with the constant cycle of forest, caves, mines, etc.

I miss these. Fun to create something of your own to show personality.

The music, characters, story, impressive visuals, amazing pacing, and it doesn't hurt that it was my very first preorder from Electronics Boutique living up to the hype from magazine previews.

Admittedly, I did know about Toriyama Akira from Dr.Slump and Dragonball fame, but I am not much of a fan of his character design work, but it fits so well with the personality of the enemies.

I am always on team Chrono Trigger. You know how great it is, just choose any track and you'd instantly remember the song and moments associated.

However, I am going to link the R4: Ridge Racer Type 4 soundtrack because it was one of the two CDs I quickly burned to help me survive a long drive to another state on my own. https://youtu.be/YIhSABz6ip0

PSO and RO ate up so much of my time. All I have left of them are fond memories. The magic was locked to the time period for me and cannot be recreated now. I suppose maybe that's how my friends enjoy Overwatch now, it is a special time but may fade over time, so they capture as much of the moment as possible now while they can. I wish I could join them.

Agreed.

>What is your go to party of 3?
As I self insert as Crono, I choose Lucca and Marle for ultimate cuties team. If I want to dominate, Crono-Ayla-Robo.

>What time period did you like best?
12000BC ... the music is so good ... and floating islands takes me back to Laputa: Castle in the Sky.

>What is your favourite tech move?
Luminare, looks so cool to me, highly damaging, requires only one person.

I do love the Panzer Dragoon soundtracks too. I've described how magical that first stage in the first game was to me in a previous Panzer Dragoon thread. Though equally powerful are songs that I hear a few notes and memories come rushing back. Games, like music, is difficult for me to pinpoint a "best" but when something is great, you just know it.

There's so much good videogame music I love. As great as songs from Bare Knuckle 1 & 2 or Thunderforce 4 & 5 are to me and even memorably badass tracks like the ones in FInal Fatnasy Tactics. I think the titles in this picture has music which really does bring memories flooding back to me.

Chrono Trigger: All the songs are great, but especially those which surround Zeal, there's imperative, there's magic, and wonder.

Ys series on TurboDuo: epic, rocking yet smooth, made playing these games amazing every time

R4: Ridge Racer Type 4: That feeling just in the zone late past midnight with neon lights making streaks in the air ...

PSO and RO: I had my time with these games, met great people, tested and felt the progress of my Japanese. It is a time I will never experience again, but the songs will remind me of all the good times.
