Daikatana was supposed to be the Quake game that he never got about a time traveling badass with a magic weapon based off his old DnD character or some shit.
Also it was his first outing without Carmack and he probably wanted to prove himself and instead flopped. It's easy to imagine he'd still have a few nightmares with this smug genius looking down on him lol

CRT monitors actually could properly display any resolution below its max specs, 480p used in most dos games was actually sharp instead of LCD that display any res other than their native like blurry mess.
In the mid 90's monitors didn't have good enough specs for higher refresh rates, but at the end and later anyone with mediocre monitor could play Quake in 640x480@120Hz. Every monitors used refresh rates in native res higher than 60Hz because on CRT's you can see the flicker with this rate.
Also using refresh rates like 120hz benefited only in fps or other high-paced 3D games. No one played Baldur's Gate or fallout in 120Hz because of course these game won't go faster than sprite animations.
