I always try to keep (Continual) Light, Levitate and Protection from Evil up.
I got tons of Strength Potions so I gulp them when I'm on lower levels.
Detect Traps is useful on low levels where the traps could kill you.
I'm not sure how invisibility works. It may reduce the chance of enemy surprise or increase your chances to flee.
Fear probably shifts battles into your favor but it's expensive to keep it up.
Passwall seems pointless unless your are trapped somewhere. Astral Walk seems to be the same with a prolonged effect.
Teleport is incredibly useful to get up and down fast. You can go up to level floors so with just four castings you're can go from top to bottom and vice versa without losing your loot.
Time Stop doesn't cancel all encounter and I tend to survive on evasion alone anyway.
Raise Dead may be useful as a fail safe for some puzzles but otherwise it's too expensive to kee up.
Word of Recall costs you all your items so it's worse than scrolls of rescue in my eyes.
Restoration is a strong healing spell when your ring of regeneration doesn't cut it.
Of the combat spells I mainly use Turn Undead because it's cheap.

You can save with F4 even in the dungeon and kill yourself with Q.
I think I broke the game by solving one of the button puzzles on level 50. At least I can't progress past level 15.
