Agree to this. 8-bit and 16-bit shmups are fun but I have a hard time getting into some of the popular 32-bit ones (aside from cute 'em ups). I want to try Eliminate Down at some point too

Play Gun Nac on NES OP, fun and easy shmup, no nonsense. Otherwise SEGA CD and TurboGrafx-CD are my go to for shmups. Keio Flying Squadron and Lords of Thunder are great.

Finally for TurboGrafx there's Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams, Super Air Zonk, and Magical Chase, For Saturn there's Hyper Duel and I guess anything by Konami but those games are also available on PS1 and in some cases SNES. Twinbee Deluxe Pack in particular is nice though.

The last one I played was Gun Nac. My supervisor also played the unlicensed Aladdin III (Magic Carpet) game on NES recently and now I kind of want to play it myself as I had no idea about it

I've been hooked on Gun Nac lately thanks to some silly Chinese handheld I bought from Five Below months ago. Game is pretty fun and relaxing on Easy Mode
