Graphical dungeon games predate text ones, access to them was just very limited.

I used to only be a JRPGer but recently I have gained in interest on computer/western rpgs. Would you guys have any suggestions? Sci-fi or games that aren't magic heavy in cheesy way would be best but I'll take any game into consideration. Oh, and please no first person dungeon crawlers, I still can't get myself to like those no matter how hard I try.

Wizardry and Ultima 1 had a story with final boss in 1981.
I haven't played it myself but apparently the PLATO dnd game from the mid-70s was winnable since you needed to retrieve two items.

Yes, Colossal Cave (originally called simply "Adventure") was the first story driven adventure game.

There were even earlier computer RPGs. The PLATO platform used by universities was where they first appeared in the mid 70s. Non-educational code was regularly deleted from their drives but generally the "first" is considered to be dnd, and you can read about several others in its Wikipedia article.

The DOS game Telengard is the easiest to play today and even though it was officially released two years after Rogue, it was coded in 1977 and based directly from the PLATO games.

Good luck playing the PLATO versions although they look pretty cool - and would probably look even cooler on a real amber vector monitor.
