The OST is one of the best on the system. The game is basically a mix of Pokémon and Dragon Quest.

Yes! I played the shit out if this, I loved that you could also access the casino games from the title screen.

Around the same time, I was also playing pic related. I had decided I wanted to get into RPGs, and damn if this wasn't the most generic-looking one I could find. It wasn't really very good, but the soundtrack alone was worth it.

OK, this is the guy who originally asked the question. I got off my ass and searched around, and finally found it. Turns out - it IS a Shin Megami Tensei game! Although it wasn't branded as such in the U.S.

The game is called Revelations: The Demon Slayer. Evidently it's part of a trilogy and only the first game was released in the U.S.

Well there are only 2 main series entries that are /vr/ so you may as well check those out. They're basically dungeon crawlers though, and note that in SMT games your demon's don't level up; you are meant to switch them out for stronger ones, so it's not really pokemon-y in that you shouldn't really get attached to your party. Then of course there are the Persona games which are markedly less apocalyptic and are nice if you like making friends in addition to fighting/collecting monsters. Start with 2 there.

Then there's pic related, which is a watered down, top-down GBC SMT (i didn't even know it was in the series until a few years back) which I would recommend to OP as a pokemon-like

It was a lot easier and a bit more fun when I replayed it with some other SMT experience under my belt. I remember this game being serious as shit when I was a kid too, playing it again after clearing SMT 1&2 makes it so cute in comparison.
