I suppose, it's odd because it's portable, so you'd assume it follows up on the GBC duology, but pretty much everything in it, the GUI/HUD and pre-rendered sprite for Spider-Man especially, looks exactly like you'd expect a portable sequel to the PS1 duology to look, I guess it could be seen as a sequel or spin-off to both at the same time, but I'm not sure, it's not really explained anywhere what the intent was, but your suggestion seems reasonable and likely.

Kyle Justin was perfect as Spider-Man. AVGN was charming back then.
