You have to post a real, proper screenshot, and YES this IS a real PC game screenshot.

Now that we're past that, what are y'all playing / doing retro shooter wise?

Personally I've been juggling Duke 3d and Shadow Warrior. Did Shadow Warrior's 3rd level and that was pretty gud aside from the jumping at the cliffs section with the tiny hornets that are very hard to hit.

I've been enjoying the Duke Nukem but feeling kind of sad that I'm approaching the end of the last episode that came with the Atomic Edition. I mean there are still the user maps / episodes etc but I really liked the 1990s design.

>But in 96/97 did people like that the N64 didn't have shaking textures and wasn't super jaggy and pixelated?

Unreal was planned for the N64 before it became the Crysis of the early 32-bit Windows era.

What is the furthest that 3D graphics can go while still being considered retro? Are there certain thresholds and methods that must be obeyed? E.g., polygon limit, max texture sizes, gouraud shading, simple texture filtering.

It's gotta be Unreal for me as well.

Incredible level design, one of my favorite OSTs ever, imaginative weapons, great enemy combat and so goddamn immersive. Every couple of years I replay the game and I always find something new. It's sublime and will always be one of my favorites.

Hard to compare the two. One was a superb singleplayer game with a tacked on multiplayer component. The other was one of the greatest competitive shooters of all time. They really feel like two halves of a whole, rather than separate things to compare against eachother.

That being said, I do go back to Unreal more often than I fire up UT. This is mostly just my preference for singleplayer games nowdays though.

I find that early 3d games were really mixed in quality.
Quake was really solid because it was Doom in 3d, they made sure that the tech worked.
Unreal felt too flashy with the coloured lighting and lens flares.
System Shock 2 along with Deus Ex just feel really clunky to me because they're so ahead of their time.
And do not get me started on early console FPS'

Unreal. A game I love so much that I still play through it every so often. Getting it and playing through on my P200 with a 3DFX voodoo 2 was, as OP puts it, a completely magical experience. From the very first moments climbing out of a dark and claustrophobic space ship into a massive open clifftop with waterfall splashing in the distance, the game had me. It was filled with incredibly ambitious design for the time, and levels like the Sky Town, Sunspire and Castle took my breath away. There was interesting lore and tons of little stories and secrets hidden throughout the levels. The music is fantastic. Perhaps the most remarkable thing was how the game captured a sense of "place" with its design, something very few games have ever done. In any case, a remarkable experience and one that will stay with me forever.
