This one actually isn't a bad idea. If you want to try wearing Doomguy down, then putting him through essentially hallucinatory nightmares where he loses control of himself and gets assaulted by horrible sights and sounds would work. He's not actually harmed because it's an illusion, but I imagine it would get grating if it happened repeatedly.
Imagine if in DOOM Eternal you get blindsided by some new psychic demon boss, and get trapped in a portion of UAC Military Nightmare, and have to find a way out of the illusion so you can attack the boss head on in a real fight (but with some Psycho Mantis-esque meta fuckery).
