Alright, lenghty spoilers ahead.

After you defeat Sargon he says that Quells are objects that contain a sealed soul, that's radically different from Tools since they're just object infused with raw Anima and can break easily.
The souls sealed inside Quells are those of Hahn's people, they created the Quells and the Egg to be revived in a distant future, when the surviving mankind would have evolved and be able to tap into the power of Quells. The Egg is an artificial Quell tasked with the purpose of gathering enough energy in order to supposedly revive the people of Hahn and get their souls out of the Quells to inhabit human bodies once again. However, the Quell absorbed so much Anima it eventually developed a deviant personality, while the normal Egg would have theoretically passively absorbed Anima, the new Quell awakened by Henry Knights, Wil's father, became a rogue Quell that feasted on the Anima of its owner and whoever came into contact with him, absorbing the anima and storing it inside the physical artefact. That causes basically the Knight's family feud against the Egg.
Theoretically, the Egg would have been a power source for the Megaliths though the exact function of the former is never properly explained, they're meant to convey Anima power and their purpose is the revival of Hahn's inhabitants, but it's not explained exactly how that would happen. There are also other things regarding the Egg that are vague, such as the ability to influence Anima in many ways, for instance how Alexei and the Pirate Captain were able to control Wyverns, or how Fake Gustave can alterate his body to some extent.
