I collect doujinshi and the past couple of years year have been a dream for me with the exchange rate. Makes me glad that there's no YouTube audience for that sort of thing because the "treasure hunt" aspect is still alive and well.

I just came back from there a couple days ago. I had low expectations because of all of the doomposting about culture erosion over the years, but I enjoyed my time. If you want an authentic experience, my advice is to visit during the off-season and to do most of your sightseeing around sunrise, lunch hours, and around/after sunset when the local population is outside. Foreigners in touristy areas are unavoidable, but I was usually the only foreigner in a train car or walking down a street on most occasions outside of those specific places. The one thing that shocked me however are the tour buses packed with tourists that you would occasionally see clogging up some attraction. I remember walking to Himeji station and seeing a giant herd of literal boomers shuffling out of an alley like zombies to presumably see the castle with their tour guide. It makes me wonder who and what convinced them to visit Japan. Anyway, just visit and see for yourself before a natural disaster or war makes it impossible to visit. Every year there are more countries becoming inaccessible, so seize the opportunity to experience it before it's too late.

This, the level of tourists drops off dramatically as soon as you reach areas that aren't within close proximity to JR line stations or cities that aren't considered as major destinations to visit. The best thing you can do is to rent a car or to build your stamina to the point where you can walk far away from the main train stations.
