The handhelds were more successful than N64 and GameCube. GB/C had 118.69 million (both platforms combined) and GBA had 81.51 million. That's more than N64 and GameCube combined.

>Why don’t people appreciate older games like they do older movies, music, etc?
Because anon, they do not appreciate older movies and music either. Go take a look at >>>/mu/ or >>>/tv/ and you'll see. Even >>>/a/ and >>>/co/ only talk about current cartoons and anime. /vr/ is honestly a huge blessing, at least for now.

The other answer is a little sadder, but to be truthful outside of a very small percentage of the population nobody really seems to care about gaming or retro gaming in general. People have actual lives, relationships, children, etc. Nobody cares about some stupid obscure retro game when they're too busy pursuing actual goals and dreams, something I'll probably never accomplish.

Tetris
Donkey Kong
Harvest Moon
Super Mario Land 2
Wario Land
Link's Awakening/DX
Zelda Oracle games

Tetris should really be number one, literally the reason people played Game Boy

For GBA I personally like Sonic Advance, Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure, Wario Land 4, and Nightmare in Dreamland, but there are also a bunch of others. Crazy Taxi: Catch A Ride, Super Monkey Ball Jr, Puyo Puyo Fever if you like SEGA stuff. There's also a fun NiGHTS Into Dreams minigame.

If you want us to go into detail it's because the og hardware is quite frankly not very good. No battery, no backlight, and forced to pay for the games themselves (or a flash cart, which is still extra money). Combine that with the ridiculous reseller prices for any handheld at this point and it's just not worth it. As other anons have also demonstrated, even after proper IPS mods the screens don't look as good.

Completely different market. I personally buy handhelds for fun five minute minigames or at the most 16-bit titles, not full on modern console titles.

I think games that were intended to be played on a handheld, should be played on a handheld. For console games you could kind of go either way, but yes the ideal would be playing them on a proper display with the original controller (or a USB/Bluetooth version of it).

Currently I only really play my Game Box Plus (Famiclone) handhelds since I don't have as much time to devote to gaming as before, but I do have bluetooth controllers for Genesis and Saturn if I want to sit down and enjoy some SEGA CD or something on my TV. But I probably won't be doing that for a while since I'm working on other projects atm.

Nintendo = Great handhelds
SEGA and Sony = Great consoles

So many people complain about N64 while forgetting Nintendo was also doing Game Boy Color at the same time which had plenty of great platformes, shmups, RPG's etc. Even if the N64 didn't have as many games as PS1 or Saturn, they still had the GBC. Handhelds have always pretty much been their strength.

Handheld games in general. The original DMG Game Boy and Game Boy Pocket had a 2.9 inch unlit screen and took regular AA batteries. No backlight, no MP3 player, no rechargeable phone battery, and you had to carry cartridges or a flash cart that costs more than a regular Micro SD card. Even with a backlight mod, the screens are not that great.

The Game Gear was arguably worse taking up to six batteries and being the size of a brick. Virtual Boy was worst of all as you had to look through a lens just to see the screen, making it cumbersome to play for many. That's not even getting into stuff like WonderSwan/Color and Neo Geo Pocket.

Thanks to emulation you can enjoy all of these games with backlight, sleep mode, quick load and quick save for when you want to resume exactly where you left off, on any device, vertical, horizontal, or clamshell. It is really the best way

Never knew about this, that's very interesting. Bizarre that they didn't release it in Japan until decades later

I still think he was a genius for the Game Boy design alone

Imho Game Boy had better aesthetic than any of the Nintendo home consoles. SEGA had them beat in that department
