What's the best pro map of any Build game ever and why is it the refinery map in Rides Again?

It's not an expansion. Is Doom 2 an expansion?

Factory map in Rides Again

It's an amazing map, it's classic style but also VERY intuitive with its puzzles and layouts, but it has its share of issues.

The entire first part relies entirely on point lights and there is no sector shading. In fact, if you play with the classic 8-bit renderer the front of the pyramid looks fullbright (like it's not affected by visibility reduction due to distance) which makes it stick out like a sore thumb.

Then in the pyramid, it uses the Newbeast enemy in ways which render them harmless. Newbeasts' shots go in a straight line, but they're either used around slopes in the main corridor, or in a room with several height differences, meaning you're highly unlikely to ever get hit by them.

Then, there is health ratio. Too many atomic healths, there is like 3 of them back to back at one point.

The cracked walls you can explode to create shortcuts are very well placed (always brings you to the next room you have to go in, which avoids backtracking) but they're marked as "secrets", which is just dumb.

And finally, the Serious Sam sprite should have been gibb-able. All the corpses sprites are in the original game, but that's an issue with Alien World Order in general: none of the new sprites can be interacted with, except one which can be destroyed, and which is the only one which shouldn't be destroyable....

Technically speaking, I think the most impressive map from a commercial Build game is the factory map (6th level iirc) in Redneck Rampage Rides Again. it's also a great map even if you don't take into account the technical aspects

The first RR is very hit or miss. There is some good stuff, and some bad stuff too, like stupid hidden switches, problems with keys (they're hard to see, and it's never clear which door require which key), etc

Route 66, the add-on, does a great job at HIDING the flaws of the original game.

Rides Again fixes most of those flaws and has some excellent level design if you ask me, and also adds some cool stuff to the mix like new enemies, vehicules, etc The first level of RA is probably the worst, too.

I think it's totally worth it to suffer through the bad stuff of the first game just to enjoy the good stuff, and then to enjoy the add-on and sequel more, but if you really hated the first level that much, you might want to switch directly to R66 and RA

Don't play that, it's shit. Just get the GOG version. It should play perfectly in DOSbox even on toasters unlike Blood.

Rides Again looks amazing. RR and its sequel have the highest texture resolution of any Build game I think.

Also they really knew how to go around the engine's limits, like mixing sector/wall shading with shading directly applied on textures. Just an example.
