Game reviewers aren't paid off, that's just gamers being paranoid and misunderstanding that reviewers have a different perspective because of their job.

There was always bullshit hype.

The games were meant to be too hard to master. You COULD master those games, but after you'd already poured in the price of a full home console game or more. For something that is supposed to be quick, immediate fun, that's BS.

Long cutscenes are not "filler." There are different kinds of games for different kinds of people, and for different moods. Sometimes I just want to shoot shit. Sometimes I want a moving story. Sometimes I want what amounts to an interactive movie. Sometimes I want total freedom. None of the design choices associated with linearity or cutscenes are invalid or poor, they are just for different tastes and situations.

Holy shit were oldschool SHMUPS good, though.
