I like all the characters and being able to choose who to take with me. I'm not playing rpgs for massive character development anyways. I wouldn't mind the game done the way you describe, but I wouln't necessarily like it better.

I agree with this. If CC was called something else and had the direct references removed it probably would have been better received.

I don't think it would suddenly be popular, but it would be like Dew Prism/Threads of Fate where no one expected anything more of it.

Trigger fans yearning for more and then getting teased has put a black mark on it forever.

I think it really gets most of it's hate from not being a direct sequel. I didn't mind the boatload of characters, I just picked the couple that I liked and stuck with them.
