DOOM has aged like cum.
>inb4 aged
See, if somebody showed you this game in 1993 and you had nothing else to compare it to, you'd probably think it was the most awesome thing ever. The problem is, it isn't 1993. There are better shooters. DOOM became irrelevant the minute Marathon was released. Then again when Quake was released. Even console shooters like Halo: Combat evolved and Timesplitters are better than DOOM. This game is a stone wheel that is only 'good' in a vacuum. DOOM has some major flaws compared to later shooters. Among them:
>You cannot aim vertically. This wasn't a design choice, it was a straight technical limitation of the game that results in lack of control, even when accounting for the game (mostly) being made with this limitation in mind.
>The health system is not only absurd in encouraging you to sprint through hundreds of pickups to maintain vitality, but could've been just as easily implemented in less repetitive ways (e.g. health 'depots' with finite resources)
>The fist and pistol become irrelevant only two levels into the game, and the vast majority of the arsenal is irrelevant if you have a plasma weapon, meaning the only distinguishing advantage of other guns is that the ammo for them is more plentiful. A good shooter gives weight and purpose to every weapon, but many of DOOM's weapons are redundant
>Enemies are not only stupid and exploitable, but largely identical outside of health, movement speed and attack range
>Environments are extremely repetitive, and lack unique features and geometry. Almost any map can be reduced to a square room with adjacent hallways or overlooks, outside of some of the later maps which are, at best, open fields which ususlly contain little more than a few vertical barriers and damage pools scattered about
DOOM's contributions to gaming are undeniable, but it's a pretty shit game compared to games released even just a year or two after it.
