I actually really like a lot of the MK3 costumes and designs. I do like the MK2 male ninjas better, but the MK3 female ninja outfit is my favorite in the whole series. Sheeva and Motaro look awesome as well. I've never been a huge fan of the cyber ninjas but I would hardly say he went to a bad place with the designs.

You really think Sonya's energy rings were supposed to be magic?? Sure Kano only attacked with his knives, but he has a fucking cybernetic eye and Jax has robot arms. MK's aesthetic has always been a mix of fantasy and sci-fi. That's a big part of what's so awesome about it.

I do agree the MK3 stages aren't generally as interesting as the outworld ones, but it does at least fit with what's happening in the game so I like it in that sense.
