Sony of Japan noticed the development of SSX 1 (then for the Dreamcast) and liked what they saw so much that they gave the Canadian dev team PS2 dev kits before the system was even out in Japan. Plus, Famitsu gave SSX 1 a gold rating and 32/40, which is the highest they've ever given an EA game (at least at the time). Tricky ended up getting a 32 as well. Gaijin game, maybe, but not filthy. You can even play as Kaori if you can't stand playing a game that doesn't have Japanese little girls.
