Bump to thanks. Thanks for the links. So many cool games once I get the computer built.

My favorite Eva games are the strip mahjong titles on PC. I also like the card/logic games more too. Iron Maiden is one of my favorite visual novels. Admittedly, I have not played the N64 game though.

Chinatown was a good place when it existed in my area. Got a lot of bootleg games there. I would imagine you could get them in China. I only got one of them in Japanese though from Japan.

Bumping for interest as well. The game seems interesting and I'd like to give it a try too. JP is fine for me if you have a link. These JP/KR/TW PC games interest me.

I watched a video, I think he recommended those hybrid drives which at this time I can find Seagate Firecudas at a minimum of 500GB, but more commonly 1-2TB. At those sizes, partitioning a 120GB just for 98 to read and leaving the rest alone seems wasteful and more likely to be used with a more recent computing parts.

Thanks, will bookmark to refer to later. I cannot hunt down 98 software easily these days. I still have to find a way to align the 98SE OS on the SSD too.

>>6173285
I have a lot of games compatible with 98. I read that 98 can only work with 128GB of space, and it starts to have issues past that point. I never got an answer if I could have two 120GB drives on different IDE cables (I don't think the SATA to IDE adapters have master/slave jumpers). Also if the SSD can take care of themselves, don't they still need some free space (in the 256 case, the non-120GB partitioned space) for garbage collection?

As mentioned the fonts for the Windows level for Japanese games. I have a couple of J-Win games, screensavers, desktop accessories from the 95/98 era which I just want to take advantage of. That is one of the last things I have to find too, cases. The fan noises do worry me so I am looking into changing to newer fans with less wear&tear and may run quieter. Cute 98OS-tan.

Thanks for the advice (I am impressed you recognized the items). My biggest hangup is the HDD/SSD and OS setup. In gathering parts one anon said a SSD would be fine, as a 120GB is affordable and is under the Win98 127GB limit. So even if the SSD was partitioned for only 80GB and the remainder left unpartitioned would not be good enough for junk collecting and a dedicated manual TRIM tool necessary? I have a spare 1TB and a 2TB Seagate Firecuda drives but those are rather large for 98SE so if they can be used ina dual-boot manner it would work out (I still have to look up how to do that though). The shared scratch disk for page/swap file on a separate HDD sounds like a great idea, but it seems wasteful with the drives I have available but I will try to save up for the suggested part.

Yeah, AGP was just a flash in the pan, but it was what I remembered for my Win2k computer I had back then. Couldn't afford a VooDoo card then nor now, so I have to go with nVidia.

>>5468337
I was hoping to augment my J-Win98SE build with digital downloads from GOG The intention of the build is centered around the OS. I missed out on titles like Grim Fandango which I hoped would work on a 98 machine. Once 980s drop in price, I may convert my current Win7 daily driver machine to an XP machine and start a retro Win7 build.

Will do. I don't have 10, and I don't have the money to go to 10 at this time but I am thinking of hitting the nuclear button and going Linux after my retro Windows7 build.

>>5467215
Sorry, I reuse old pics as noted by the 2017 magazine was taken in 2017, and I have slowly been saving to build the JWin98SE machine for a couple years now. The parts like the Audigy2 and DVD drive were stuff I already had. The Pentium 3, 512MB stick of RAM, is new and somewhat costly. I did finally get one of those floppy emulators and another anon suggested I go with 120GB SSDs with Sata to IDE converters so I hope to save up enough to get those next. I may not be able to afford them but I am trying to save up, it's not easy with my situation.

Fortunately, the CRT TVs I have accept 480i and 480p, but that is disappointing. I suppose there are no emulators nor drivers that can force 240p out of the 6800 or 5950 I intend on using.

Thanks for the assurances. I get to save the 1TB Firecuda only being used for 128GB, and 120GB SSDs are currently around the $25USD mark seems affordable. I do want to know if I can use two 120GB SSDs on Win98, as the SATA to IDE adapters don't appear to have any master/slave jumpers. There's just so many DOS/95/98 games I am interested in.

>>5373437
Thanks so much! This is the answer I was looking for. I will be seeking out 0.78 for 98. I skipped 98 and went to 2000 and I found 0.100, 0.120, and the switchover from 32 to UI at 0.126. Next up, I'll have to find the last 98 compatible NEStopia, Gens/Kega, etc. just to play around with the S-video out.

>>5371401
I know, I thought I was up to date, but it still works for me and I like it, but I found out my "current" system is a more ideal XP build and so maybe a new retro 7 build for a daily driver.

I have my emulation computer which is Intel 4th gen core but has mobile graphics, I don't think that will suffice now. My main computer is a 2nd generation Intel, so that's even worse for a modern computer.

>>4900990
Yeah, I decided to get a 1.4Ghz P3 and the 6800 since they were cheap to replace the 1.2Ghz P3 and 5900 which I found in that picture. Now I think I have enough parts to build 2 semi-similar machines (need a mobo tho). I think it will suffice for Win98, but not good enough for XP, but is Glide emulation comparable? I figure I am missing out without the actual hardware as the Voodoo cards were very different architectures.

>>4901580
Since I am aiming for J-Win98SE, I was unable to find drivers that would support past a 6800. Unless there were updates to allow a 7800 or beyond, I don't think I'm willing to go that far. Thanks for the link, saves me from hunting down a Live!

>>4901797
I don't plan on OC the machine, but I just want to play some J-Win9x games I haven't given enough time because I was on 2000 at that time. I have a 486DX4 and early Pentium-75 which I still have cards for my DOS needs. The most demanding titles I may install, which I can think of are: Quake 3, Unreal Tournament, Max Payne (1), NOLF1&2, Oni, and Shogo. So would a different graphics card serve my purposes better? The monitor I will be using maxes out at 1920x1200 (can be higher but too small for its size) 85hz, so I don't think I will gain much benefit from super high framerates.

I originated from /h/ have yet to look at /g/. I just want to enjoy all the J-Win98SE games I missed out on (and I cannot afford a modern computer). Just making due with cheap parts and 98 seems like a good place since I already have a 486DX4 for my DOS purposes. Couldn't find what would be great for an XP build yet, but maybe then I will consult /g/ instead of /v/ when that time comes as I am currently doing with /vr/ for the J-Win98 build. As for crossposting, I regret just missing out on a /k/ crossposter here on /vr/ giving away the JP VN Muv-Luv, and now I remember really wanting that game back whn Himeya was offering the games to the USA.

>>4795890
Yup! That sound exactly like the game I played. Isaku was interesting, but I was only on US DOS and not DOS/V, so I couldn't read the game. Aside from Elf and TGL, I remember I also liked Leaf for their old J-Win games/VNs. No one was as excited for Aquapazza on PS3 as I was for the characters that game brought together.

>>4796242
Where do you source your eroge? It is not easy for me to hunt down the J-Win games, especially for 98 and earlier.

For the J-Win98SE build, I thought maybe the VXD drivers for the Audigy ZS2 would suffice and work with DOS. Is there no other way for PCI sound cards to work in DOS? The motherboard I got for the J-Win98SE build does have a built in sound and graphics, but no ISA slots, so I am stuck with choosing a PCI sound card.

It's okay, the aim of the J-Win98SE build is more for J-win games and the 98 games I missed out on. I still have a 486DX4 for the top two cards, and maybe I will resurrect my uncle's Gateway P5-75 with the bottom two cards in >>4748971 for DOS gaming.

Thanks for a great answer. So I guess I will eventually have to get a 2nd HDD for the J-Win98SE machine and have a lot of wasted HDD space as the motherboard I got only has one ATA-100 port for hard disks.

>>4697590
Well, I have to get new HDDs as I don't have many spares lying around. Also I kind of want some modern parts like a power source and the HDDs for reliability, as I want to keep the machine going for a while.

Anyway, limiting the HDD space does save me from the question of "what was the last MAME32 that runs on Windows98?" So I guess it is a purely dedicated J-Win98 machine now.
