Indeed, I recall playing it on a Famicom clone all those years back, my "PolyStation" with my only cartridge, that had a NES Tekken ROM hack, but also had Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six... and Batman, which was the best one by far... it's really a completely different experience coming back to it today, it's 15min long if you know how to get around things... but back then I struggled.

I agree, it really feels like they ran out of time, it goes from maze like stages, that aren't linear, at the same time they weren't too maze like, a nice balance... and then it's just bland hallways really.

I wish we had gotten a 16-Bit version, and more time on the oven, because the level design early on, finding items and using Spider-Man's powers and mobility... it's nice, not spectacular, but nice.

Spider-Man on GBC is a decent title, but quite a pain too, due to it being a MetroidVania where exploring feels more like a hassle than anything else, especially due to flying enemies being the worst, and the sewer area, which is the main of the whole adventure, being a chore to navigate overall, and the leveling mechanics not being all that polished... Spider-Man 2: The Sinister Six on GBC essentially fixes EVERYTHING. It keeps the good graphics and OST, but follows a traditional level to level structure that works well enough, while have levels that are 10x better than before.

I have a hard time recalling other situations that the sequel MOGS the original THIS MUCH too...

Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six (1992/NES)
I get a lot of the criticism, it was a 1992 NES release, so it came out way after all of the classics that showed people what the NES could do, and it also came out after Amazing Spider-Man for Game Boy and Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin on Genesis and Master System/Game Gear, so there were many superior NES titles to compare it to, and many superior Spider-Man titles to compare it to... but it's still decent in its own right. One of the main complaints is the controls, but they're really not complicated and work well enough in the level design, which by the way is excellent, especially the 2nd and 3rd levels, with some more platforming, combat and exploration, it's a cozy 15min adventure to me.

Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six is absolute mediocrity, subpar in pretty much everything it's attempting to do... and yet I'll still defend it until I die. Of course, I grew up with it, so I'm biased, I admit that right now, but I really don't find it bad, or at least not as bad as people often say, one of the main complaints is control, but they're simple once you get used to them, A jumps and B shoots web, when you have it, or punches otherwise, it's also a jump kick if you double tap it quickly, then there's the web-slinging, which you barely use in this due to there being few situations where it's truly viable, which is a shame, and jumping does lock you vertically sometimes, but it's never this real issue due to the platforming and levels in it being pretty simple to go through if you wait and act patient. I actually love the level design early on, Sandman's level and Mysterio's level most of all, you have to find items to progress and levels, even though they're relatively small, feel big as you search for things, while still not making you get lost... I love this one quite a bit, even today.
