Like I said, the series was always goofy. It was originally based on Bloodsport. Raiden was based on Lightning from Big Trouble in Little China, Johnny Cage punching people in the dick, and fucking Santa. In MK2, you had Johnny Cage uppercutting people's heads off them three times, Kitana's inflation fetish (another Big Trouble callback), Mileena inhaling people and vomiting up femurs, "IT'S OFFICIAL. YOU SUCK!" babalities and friendships, and fucking Toasty.

They games had a sliver of genuineness with the lore but they were meant to be a fighting game with b movie aesthetic. Interviews from the time even confirm this. Either you were sheltered from Mortal Kombat as youth and thus create some mythic headcanon for it or you bought into boomer "muh kids" arguments from the time and thought the game was supposed to be serious.
