A (readymade) artwork from over a hundred years ago remaining evocative is the definition of successful art. The quality of art is defined by technical skill alongside audience interpretation. If an artwork intends to be evocative and fails to evoke anything from audiences then it's "bad" art and will be forgotten as those audiences move on to more evocative work. Readymades remain highly evocative as it brings into question the necessity for complex mediums and refined techniques over the ability to communicate ideas through abstraction. Until the general public is willing to admit conceptual abstraction is just as important as technical ability, readymades will continue to be successfully evocative art.

Put another way, the artist's intention ends where the audience's interpretation begins. I suggest you read "The Death of the Author" by Roland Barthes.
