I had a soft spot for 3 with the Doc Man twist and Proto Man, but looking back I think 4's the first game where they actually hammer out all the kinks in the formula.
There's no equivalent to the Boobeam trap or Heat Man's disappearing blocks in that game. It's all pure Mega Man goodness from beginning to end.
