I agree the love story is hamfisted; but that's not the same as "shoehorned" at all. The fact that things escalate randomly and the whole thing generally seems written by somebody with relationship experience limited to shojo manga doesn't mean you get to ignore that's going on at any given moment.

FFVII got a lot of interest from the romantic subplots and they clearly doubled down on that, trying to appeal to a larger audience with the full high-school-age cast as well; you may remember that the promotion and coverage was very much focused on the central relationship. Even the widely circulated Dollet Mission demo had Rinoa replacing Selphie.
