To be honest the story of M1 is a bit disconnected from the stories of M2 and MI, but it's still important to know things like who the Spht are and stuff like that which isn't explained unless you played M1.

Weland actually got a very big update recently. The big issue is that Aleph One is very much lacking when compared to what you can do in say, gzdoom. I can easily create a cool level in Marathon but I can't do colored lighting, 3D architecture, slanted floors, etc.
