Well, that was my first impression of those games. I think the developers working within the limitations of the gameboy hardware played a role too.

My impression of the FF series is that they try to overdo everything, from the characters, the monsters, the bosses, and the story. This is most noticeable in the later games. What they ended with are fruity-looking characters that look like drag queens/kings from a pride parade screaming for attention with their flamboyant looks and outfits, nonsensical weapons that are bigger than the characters themselves, monsters/bosses with over 9000 limbs, heads, and eyes, lame plots about villains with issues (they almost always have issues) trying to destroy the world for one reason or the other. Though the world destruction theme isn't uncommon, in FF they overdramatize it. When something is overdone, it produces the opposite effect.
