2 is the one most worth playing. 1 feels like a prototype, 3's story is Rick & Morty fan fiction.

You know it's proto-Halo right? Start with 2, the first one sucks. 2 has Bungie's favorite one trick pony, setting up large battles between multiple hostile factions and throwing you into it. That is literally 90% of the game and level design is typically crude but the gunplay and physics carry it. If you're used to how Bungie "designs" "games" you'll have fun

Why don't I ever see these games in retro FPS threads? The engine has neat features like proper water that's not just a teleporter trick, newtonian physics (like Blood) and vacuum areas which deplete your suit's oxygen.

It also has nice looking assets even prior to the remaster and a unique, distinctly Bungie level design aesthetic and fun weapons like akimbo shotguns that you spin to reload.

Some people consider it just Boomer Halo, a prototype of what was to come, but to me it has a charm of its own and was insanely sophisticated for 1994. Especially all the multiplayer modes
