I've always been fascinated by early attempts at horror or "horror-themed" video games. Obviously there probably aren't many classic games that are legitimately scary, particularly to a modern player, but I'm still interested in gamers that aimed to evoke fear or unease.

What do you think are the best (or most interesting) examples of horror in video games prior to the survival horror boom?

The C64 has the very first real survival horror game. Impossible on the NES, especially in America.

>The C64 is at its best when doing computer-oriented genres
Sadly those were still in their infancy and thus pretty bad. Strategy and adventure games in particular were so cumbersome to control.

First survival horror game, with most of its cliches even. Key cards, monsters, ammo management, cutscenes n all that jazz. It's not as good as Sweet Home, but at least it's actually an RPG.

But honestly, this is dumb. This game is not underappreciated, as it's primarly absolutely fucking unknown, at least in the wester community, where we are.
We could post a shit ton of underappreciated, obscure Japan exclusives, because how the fuck would anyone appreciate something they don't know.
At least pick a translated game or something. There are a lot of good games with translation patches, that nobody appreciates. Neither the game, nor the hard work that went into translating.

Project Firestart is proto-Resident Evil as fuck. Shame it never got the attention it deserves.
C64 1989 (should've really been an Amiga title)
