>Even so, I suspect this 'meta game' (good term) wore thin after a few years.

There are still lots of games with interesting meta games like this. Fighters are a perfect big example these days. The debates about character tiers and match ups are endless. Also the Souls games and pic related.

>It's not just a 1986 vs. 2017 thing, it literally puts a very short time limit on one of the game's primary design points.

It does, it's whether you see that as a bad thing or not.

Obviously, the amount of time and effort one puts into anything will show in the final product and games are no exception. I was really just mocking that guy's try hard troll attempt.

Either A or B could be an approach someone has to making a game though and more likely it's somewhere in between. A seems more about doing as a form of income and B is more doing as a passion project.

Pic related is a good blend between passion for something he wanted to do in specific while at the same time trying to make it profitable. It was unpopular with many, but those who liked what it was and was going for really liked it.

Not him but I think both styles can still work. I know this game got a lot of hate, but I loved the way it looked.

Not him, and this will probably get a bunch of hate because the creator is a french canadian bag of dicks, but Fez did an amazing job of conveying story and world building with barely real dialogue.

>However, it's dishonest.

You say it's pretending to look old and then list off all the ways it doesn't look old. Meh. I just like the look of it. It doesn't bother me at all that it's reminiscent of older graphics, but not exactly the same as any one.

I can see where you're coming from, but I don't personally feel that way. Fez was one of my favorite looking games of all time though and there are many people who honestly think it looks like dogshit. Diff'rent strokes...

I didn't say CoD was bad, I just said I didn't play it. CoD is great for people who like CoD. The great thing is that even though I don't like that game, there's so many of so much variety that there's always something else I do want to play.

Just Cause 2 is hardly obscure. Also I would kick your ass at any fighter and those are huge now. Also Monster Hunter. Ohh and I get Animal Crossing street passes almost every day.

Suck it you big baby. :)

>New games pander to the masses now.

Not that this is the place to talk about them, but there are plenty of great games still coming out. They're just not necessarily the big name ones. I still have more games getting added to my pile each year than I have time to play.

But then I'm of the opinion that games have always been pandering. I've rarely been a fan of what's big and popular at the time. Platformers for example never really interested me, but there was a time they were freaking huge. To this day I've only ever bothered to beat Marios 2 and 3, barely touched World and zero interest in any of the 3D ones.

Which isn't to say that I think the Mario games are bad. Rather that what people like in games can vary wildly and not everything is going to appeal to anyone. In the same way that I dug through platformers to find the stuff I liked back in the old days, now I dig through FPSs to find the stuff I like.

What's popular changes, but there's actually a crazy variety of games being made now if you go out and look for them.

Also, what you end up liking doesn't have to be popular. I fucking LOVED Fez, it was one of the weirdest games I've ever played. A strange, dreamy exploration/puzzle/cryptography game. No skin off my back that most people hated it. I got a game I loved, that's all I care about.

tl;dr

Except of course I forgot my pic.

That's fair. We don't have to have the same ideas about what looks good.
