Castlevania 3 is fucking awesome.

In oldschool Final Fantasy is there any significance to which character holds which crystal? Like, do the four elements correlate with their personality in some way?

Very well. I find 3 to be the pinnacle of the series. Atmosphere comes together so well with a combination of great sprite art, a fantastic soundtrack, and good choice in color usage to create about as good of a horror theme as one could on the system. Even further beyond that, the game is practically bleeding out level design quality and even manages to bring new and great features without ruining the formula such as new characters with unique abilities and multiple paths. It's also one of the more satisfying games to beat in general due to the constant challenge which pushes you to do better and that moment in which you do is irreplaceable. It's not out of reach and you have infinite lives, so the game is practically teasing you with "Come on anon, just one more try!". This game's quality is high enough to potentially even change what one might expect from a game during its era. It plays like something from late 16 bit that was shoved into an NES cart for some reason. It's also rather impressive that Konami managed to localize the OST so well considering the loss of the expansion audio provided to Akumajo Densetsu via the VRC6. All around this game is just a product of love and effort. It's one of the games that really keeps me coming back.

I actually don't really understand where a lot of this hate come from. Most of the Castlevania games are great even at their worst compared to other games of their respective genres. I don't even like Castlevania 2 that much, but I can't say that it is in any way unplayable.

In any case, to answer OP's question, I prefer Bloodlines more. I think that if you take into consideration the limitations of the hardware (not a fan of the Genesis's soundchip), the game came out beautifully; the gameplay is fast, the graphics look great, and the character design is inspired. I do think it is a little easier than most of the Castlevanias, but it is an exceptional title.

Dracula X for SNES is probably one of my least favorite titles (even though it does have one of the hardest Dracula fights at the end). I think the real problem is that even though it is a decent title, when you compare it to Dracula X for the PC Engine, all the shortcoming are more apparent, even if it isn't really a port. That, and I absolutely hate how hit invincibility is reduced, so you end up getting hit multiple times by many bosses for one mistake (the bat boss comes to mind).

Either way, the American version of Castlevania 3 is still my favorite. The Japanese one is just too easy.

If anything, why is Annette such a piece of shit vampire killer compared to Richter and Maria?
