Thunder Force 2 is rough around the edges and may not be the best place to start. Thunder Force 3 is often more widely-considered a good starting point for people into the genre, especially since it's easier than TF4.

The best way to into shmups is to find a game that looks interesting and start playing, honestly. If you're emulating you might also enjoy Steel Empire (pic related) since it has some nice steampunk graphics.

I like the covers of both JP and US/PAL versions.

JP cover looks like something straight out of Castle in the Sky or what Moebius would come up with.
