I remember there being some conservative backlash when people found out you could have same-sex romances in The Sims, then again when you could have a gay shotgun wedding in Fallout 2. And then again in the cases of Fable and Knights of the Old Republic.

It doesn't stop with retro games, either.
I specifically recall there being significant controversy over the inclusion of a gay pirate in Temple of Elemental Evil, and /v/ is still quite butthurt about "pandering" in the Mass Effect series.
