Hard Corps all the way.
Contra III is fine and all, and is the more "conservative" of the two when the series roots and aesthetics are considered, but I don't like the slowdown that's prominent in some of Konami's early SNES games, and the top down sections haven't aged that well.
Hard Corps plays and feels like a "what if Treasure were given a crack at the franchise", which is ironic given that some of Treasure's key members worked on Contra III.
My favorite Contra though, is Shattered Soldier
