As said in the OP and >>1175897, Aladdin's and Earthworm Jim' sprites were hand drawn with cels and then scanned into the game digitally rather than the traditional sprite art technique of doing it from scratch. The process was called Digicel.

Aladdin's sprites were all done by Disney animators, for instance.
