There was no such requirement. All three consoles were capable of drawing sprites in the same way. Don't speak so proudly about things you don't actually know.

That's not what I asked and it's incorrect anyway, niggerfaggot.

You're talking shit. Playstation didn't have to draw sprites using polygons - in fact, it had a mode just for sprites which was twice as fast as polygons. The bottleneck for drawing sprites was invariably fillrate, and the Playstation GPU shits all over VDP1 for that.

>So when t says "polygon = 1", does that mean your primitive is a 3D object?
It says that the primitives supported by the GPU are polygons, lines and rectangles. You provide that number as part of a GPU command to say which you are drawing.
> And lets say for a moment the hardware could draw 512 x 1024 2D prims, why the hell is almost every game using polygons for sprites?
They aren't. The only reason you would want to is to do rotation/scaling. There's just no advantage otherwise.

Just to inb4: showing a wireframe capture from an emulator doesn't demonstrate anything. Emulators commonly render using triangle primitives primitives regardless of whether the hardware did. OpenGL even internally may render flat quads with 2 tris.

Here is an official reference to the Playstation's ability to draw a sprite as a primitive.
