Donkey Kong Country was a shitty wannabe of the Sonic games, unfortunately for them Sega earned way more money with their superior animal mascot platforming games because they were just much better.

If something has name brand recognition it tends to get handed to capable, well known developers. When a game is shitty despite the brand it gets forgotten and tends to sell badly so again you're missing my point. A better known company is better known because it has more talented programmers, artists, writers, and other creators. Games with little advertising will still sell well if they're actually good. Five Nights at Freddy's began as a failed kickstarter that made no money but look how popular that turned out because of its quality.
